"She told UTV that one in ten young Protestants from a socially disadvantaged background currently attending school have the opportunity to go to university - compared to one in five for young Catholics of a similar background."

http://www.u.tv/News/Uni-less-likely-for-Protestant-working-class/f601375b-6bb4-4e27-8eaa-a1efbb2a0af6

I just find this report astounding. And on UTV tonight she said this did not happen overnight.

Full report is here
http://www.atl.org.uk/Images/EDPWC%20Research%20Summary%20Dec10.pdf

A previous report in 2001 also signalled this.
http://www.ofmdfmni.gov.uk/partrate.pdf

There's a more frightening statistic in today's report...
"The overall headline statistics remain that 41.6% of the workforce have no qualifications at all (the UK average, without qualifications, is 18.9%) and 25% of the working population are functionally illiterate."

I wouldn't worry too much about the p7 exams, we've got bigger problems...

    its an old report .

Anyway everyone knows Catholics are more intelligent than Protestants
Catholics learn to count on their rosary beads ,
Protestants still think there are 12 fortnights in July .

Ask any Protestant when they get their holidays and the answer is always the 12th fortnight .

You see I am right .
so who wants to hit the snitch button and report this post .

Just wondering about Dawn Purvis who is only in STormont because if the loyalist vote on the back of the late DAvid Ervine. It will be interesting to see how she preforms in the forthcoming elections since she has dumped her loyalist connections. How exactly is she qualified?
    Just interested.

I think she went and did a degree at Queens in social science or something as a mature student.

I could be wrong, but I think the chances are that David Ervine, if he were alive today, might have moved on politically in the same way as she has.

Couldn't agree more it's the old gravy train up in stormont for MLAs that obviously could make the big dosh in their chosen career. Funny now what happened to
Double jobbing --must have died at death. Perhaps if they took a cut in wages and expenses they could help the disadvantaged in the community by employing them in their offices as opposed to their Grannys, Aunties, cousins etc etc. Talk is cheap

In my opinion DUP and the Ulster Unionists in disadvantaged protestant areas need to start representing the people in these areas that voted them in.

Any disadvantaged area is better off without an 11 plus exams. DUP and Ulster Unionsts will tell disadvantaged protestants that Sinn Fein dont want the 11plus and protestants do.

There is no protestant political party that represents disadvantaged protestants. DUP and Ulster Unionists are both acting in the best interests of middle to upper class protestants.

A DUP representative in Malone Rd in Belfast should have different views than a DUP representative in the Shankill Rd but they will both sing from the same hymnsheet.

Sinn Fein with all their faults do represent disadvantaged catholics. They on the other hand should represent middle class catholics better,

I think the decline of authority the Roman Catholic church has on society is a major factor why RC's are now better educated than Protestants. In the past, when the RC church had more control they usually picked out the best students to study within the church (nuns, Priests, Bishops), so the church got smart, but ordinary Catholics lost out. This may have suited the churches tactics during that time............ Now, the best students within the Catholic system are free to choose professions of their own choice. I think its a possitive step forward.
