Need to turn my daughter into a 1940 country girl

My 8 year old daughter is playing the part of a 1940 country girl in her school Christmas play. Does anyone know what 8 year old girls wore during the war? I am not good at sewing, so I will have to adapt clothes she already has or Charity Shop finds. Please help.

wooly cardigan, thick tights and a dress. A wooly beret on her hair would be good as well.

Wasn't The Land Girls movie set in the 1940s, perhaps you could get some ideas from that. Also check this website...

I think that is what the Land Army Girls wore. My daughter is playing the child of a family who take in an evacuee.

My Mum was a country girl in the 40s. Pics of her have her wearing a dress (she had a gingham one like the school summer dresses), knitted cardi, brown lace up shoes and always wrinkly socks  hair in little scruffy bunches with a scrap of ribbon and usually sat on a fat pony with a rabbit tucked under her arm and a collie dog snapping at her ankles (though I don't expect that there would be room on the stage for any of those!).
Just run, run and keep on running!

what about the box with a gasmask in, nice and easy to make. Just get a box from a supermarket and cut it down a bit.
What about one of the little tags that they used to have on with their details?

It sound's like she'll look lovely! I'm thinking of the recent Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe film! Very simple cardies and a gey skirt, I'd love to see pictures!
