Tax refund.

Hiya,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here...
I have done some work during the financial year 10-11, but I am pretty confident that I haven't earned my full personal allowance, yet have been getting taxed.
Now I know you can get a refund on overpaid tax, but I am not sure how you go about it. I rang up my tax office (Newcastle), and the automated lines told me that I should check online etc. I don't have a P60, and I haven't got all of my P45's.
Does anybody know how I would find out for sure if I am owed a refund, and if I am, how do I go about getting it? It would be great if someone could tell me roughly how long it takes to receive it too!

I received a letter in October 2010 saying that I had overpaid tax in the financial year 08/09 and then received a cheque for the amount... but it took them over a year to realise this (at the time I didn't know you could get a refund so didn't do anything about it). I'm really not keen on waiting another 18 months or so for this cheque haha.

TIA

When I thought I had overpaid tax I calculated all my earnings over the year and all the tax that I paid. I wrote a letter to my local tax office saying that I had overpaid tax and gave them my calculations. I sent the letter beginning of February and last week received a cheque for the whole amount. I didn't send them any paperwork other than the letter so I don't think you will need your P60 and P45s.

Just noticed that you said 2010-2011 tax year, you will probably have to wait until after 5th April to send the letter.

Post your earnings figures on here (inc any benefits such as JSA) and your Code number .... and someone will calculate if you've overpaid or not.

As we're now close to the tax year end (5th Apr) - you're not going to get any refund due via your salary - so you need to wait for your P60. Which has to be given to you - by your employer - by 31st May.

I'm going to try and find as much paperwork as I can tonight about all my earnings for this tax year, and then I will post on here.

When I get my P60 will that detail all earnings for the tax year or just from this employer? And is that what I will have to send to the tax office to claim my refund?

Sorry for all the questions, this is the first year i've properly worked and i'm new to all the tax stuff ha!

    TIA

If you've changed employers during the year and there were P45s between them .... then the P60 should have all the detail (split between 'this' and 'previous' employments).

But you should check P45s as well just to make sure and send them with the P60 if they don't tally. And aggregate them all on your covering letter. Assuming - of course - your figures show a refund due?
