in Cutting tax
Hi all
I have recently made a claim to my tax office to reclaim tax that i have paid on my professional subscriptions. They have just sent me a new tax code to repay me the £1204 they have owed me from the past 6 years. I called them today to establish if they could pay me this money by cheque as a lump sum but i was told no. Is this correct

If they've sent you a new tax code as part of this, then you'll be getting the money back by effectively underpaying tax for the next year.
I've known people to be sent cheques by HMRC for some rebates though, and I'm not aware of the situations under which they would do this as opposed to code adjustment...0 -
Is this correct
I understand that where there's a retrospective claim, such as this, then they are now coding it all out. Although that fact doesn't appear to have filtered through to the website :-

what year was the code changed for?, if it is for 10/11 and its used by your employer. Then effectively you will receive the money as a lump sum in your March pay packet. As its the last pay packet of the year then it gets refunded in one go.
If it was for 10/11 and the code isn't used by your employer then when you receive your P60 contact the tax office, see if they have their copy of the P60 and request a calculation to be done, this will trigger a refund via cheque.
Bare in mind that your are getting tax relief on your subscriptions not the cost of the subscriptions themselves back. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Thank you everyone for all your help. Thankfully i am getting paid a lump sum. I wrote to them stating i was in financial hardship (always helps) and i just had to send them my P60. Just waiting for my cheque. Yippee0
