Term time working

Hi all,

My husband has finally got back into work! I am really pleased we are on the up after months on benefits.

I am looking for some advice, if anyone has or is working term time only.

My husband will not get paid during the school holidays so I am worried about what we will do. We will still get working tax credit each week.

Is it going to be a struggle do you think, I am mainly worried about the summer holidays.

Also I am hopefully starting work next year Jan time, if anyone knows how would this affect income? Erm.... when he isn't getting paid but I am.

Sorry for the awkwardness I am not very good at posting!

  • Do check how his pay is being spread - I know some people on term time only contracts have their pay spread across 12 months, so they do get paid during the holidays. It does mean a smaller monthly pay cheque though.

When you start work, your income will go up, so your working tax credits will go down. Also any other means tested benefits you recieve are also likely to go down or cease (make sure you tell WTC and the benefits people promptly to avoid ending up with an overpayment).

    Hi thanks for the reply,

It isn't spread over the year which I was hoping it would have been.

He is working for an agency for 8 weeks then the school will recruit him.

I can't remember but Im sure he was told by an employee of the school that she doesn't get paid for the hols either.

I work in a school and my pay is paid over 12 months. If I have to take any holiday (occasional time for appointments etc) then I lose pay the next month.

How I would approach this then (but you need will power!) is to work out yourself, what the pay would be if it was spread out over 12 months, then open a savings account, and taking the difference each month and put it in the savings account (probably by standing order the day after payday would be best). Use the cash from this savings account to pay yourself during the holidays, that way, you will have a guaranteed income throughout the whole year with no gaps.

Yes my husband said we will save to cover us in the hols. My concern with that is would we ever be able to save for things we need or is it best to wait until I am working do you think

    Thanks

All local authorities I've worked with pay term time workers in 12 equal monthly installments. Maybe the agency will pay upon receipt of a timesheet for actual hours worked, whereas when he goes permanent with the school he will get the whole deal (ie. rolled up holiday pay into his annual salary, pension with the school, contractual requirement not to take holiday during term time, etc).

She won't get paid for the hols, but will get paid in the hols. It is standard to average pay out over 12 months.

Once he's employed by the school, if he's working term time (38 weeks) and training days (1 week), he gets paid a total of 44 weeks including holiday pay, spread across 12 equal monthly payments.

Thank you all, I am going to try not to worry for now. I should get him to ask really but he forgets! He is taking his time sheets to the agency each week. We are going to the agency today with his P45, would it be worth asking if they know how the pay is once he's employed by the school. Or should we just stick it out until it all happens.

I only know of one person who has worked for a school before and they did not receive any wages during the school hols. ((which is where all this worrying started, because they struggled))
