Re: DSS MORTGAGES

What do you mean by "Unable to get upstairs of present home"? I don't understand.

first I have to say I am no expert ,but my parents did a similar thing many years ago .There situation was different because my brothers name was also on the mortgage at the time .When my brother got married he took his name of the mortgage and DSS paid the Interest .As I understand it DSS will pay the interest only .you still have to repay the mortgage .
  • I have become so disabled I find it very difficult to climb the stairs. Some days I am unable to move very much due to chronic pain.
  • I have my mortgage paid by DSS at the moment, but I need to move to a bungalow. DSS pay interest at national rate and I pay the difference in building society rate.

Have you been assessed by an occupational therapist? They can recommend adaptations etc to enable you to continue in your present home and also discuss any alternative possibilities.

Make sure you are getting all the benefits available to you. If you are worse now than before, your Disability Living Allowance should reflect that. Your local CAB can do a benefits check - they should offer a home visiting service if you can't get into your local office.
  • The money you get for selling your current home will be "Earmarked" for the new bungalow and will not be regarded as capital for means tested benefit purposes. this earmarking is time limited so it would be best if you had your new property in mind before selling your current house.

It might be worth asking your local Social services about Disabled Facilities Grants for making your current house more suitable for your disability needs as although the DWP will pay your interest, and may give some assistance from the social fund towards moving costs, there will be a lot of additional costs involved in moving such as solicitors/estate agent fees.

  • Thank You for all your help. Maybe I should clarify things a bit more. I have had alterations to bathroom etc to aid me a few years ago. I could not use a stair lift on my bad days as I would not be mobile enough to use it.

I get high dla mob/care at the moment although this will be reviewed 2006. had to fight for 3 years to get this!

I originally had high mobility for "life " and low care for " life ".
After five years I applied for middle care and they took my low care away. After many tribunals they backdated and allowed me "high" care and high mobility until 2006. Anyone confused yet ?
My condition has got worse and after having a spate in hospital they regarded me as being at risk at home, they would not discharge me unless I agreed to move my bed downstairs until I could get more suitable accommodation. But now that I am home nobody seems much interested .
