Many thanks to all of you (in varying degrees of sobriety) who replied to my original plea - armed with the knowledge gleaned from your wise heads I contacted my broker early this morning expressing my concerns about laying out close to seven hundred quid on fees for a mortgage I hadn't even been deemed creditworthy for yet - and lo and behold he got back to me within the hour telling me to just send all the proofs of ID required and to not bother sending the cheque for the upfront fees - that would be dealt with later on in the process.

So thanks to you good people, a potential weekend of serious worrying has been transformed into a one that will be sleepeasy (well, as sleepeasy a home with a 1year old in can be).
