A friend is expecting a baby girl in a few weeks time. I'd like to make something pretty & practical for them (hopefully simple as well) , but I'm realy stuck with ideas, I'm not very creative at all.
all ideas are welcome, thanks!

I'd go for a pram/cot coverlet, either joining squares together in a simple quilt pattern, or just choosing pretty fabric, perhaps with a contrast on the 'wrong' side. I got some very reasonable Beatrix Potter fabric on ebay, and used a matching gingham on the back, for my daughter's twins. I hope this makes sense - I cut the gingham bigger all round, and folded it back on to the right side of the main fabric, so it had a border.
One important thing - make sure the fabric is machine washable! Babies don't realise they shouldn't puke on precious silk heirlooms.
Edited to add:
I had just been posting on the sewing thread, and assumed you meant something to sew - sorry if this isn't at all helpful!0 -
I'd go for a pram/cot coverlet
it sounds a bit like 'mission impossible' to me & i don't have a sewing machine...
i've already bought a baby car seat, but would like to give them something special, unique, handmade (needs to be simple to make though).
i don't really know what, maybe sock cupcake, nappy cake, etc, but i don't know how to start. has anyone got any instructions & photos they could share on here? cheers!0 -
can you knit? There are loads of free patterns on ravelry - a little hat or bootees should only set you back the cost of 1 ball of wool.
I would get them a sling though to be honest - have a look on Ebay for Moby, Kari-Me or Close slings - they are an absolute godsend0 -

A newspaper and a couple of magazines bought on the day she's born? In a pretty keepsake box?
You could buy a plain box and cut up one of the magazines to do a quick decoupage, otherwise known in this house as 'cutting and sticking'.
You could get ahead a bit by buying a magazine for the right month and using that to decorate the box, then add the date specific things. Cutting and sticking doesn't have to be perfect, and is a really relaxing way to spend an hour.0 -
you can buy kits to take casts of the babies hand or foot and they are cheap in wilks i think that would be memorable and crafty xxx:A :j0

Hi, The newspaper idea is a great one, my friend asked me to pick her one up when her baby was born. Otherwise a really nice classic book she'll be able to keep and write a message inside it. There are some great classic illustrated books available, I've bought an Alice In Wonderland, Robert Sabuda pop-up book before for a Christening present as a keepsake, it went down a treat.0

I just made my friend a daft pressi which was a new mum survival kit adapted from here
I then bought the baby a keepsake box from here. You could always try and make one.
I also bought the baby a book and mum some smellies.
Someone on here put a link to a site which made a poster or picture which was a birth announcment. It had babies name, DOB, day of birth, weight, birth place etc. I think it would be easy to make and print on nice photographic paper and pop in a frame. I'll see if I can find the link.0
