Look at free or low-cost amusements.
The park, a walk on the beach, some museums offer free entry.
Do children play at home any more without spending money?
As a younger child, I was quite happy to mess around on the kitchen table with some newspapers, scissors, glue, crayons and the like.
I used to love playing cribbage or whist with my grandmother.
It's not rose-tinted spectacles, most of these things were cheap and genuinely good fun.
I liked going out as well, but a treat was no more than the cost of an ice cream, not the amount parents seem to spend on children today.
