Tax Rebates...How To Go About?

in Cutting tax
Hi to all,
I'm currently a mature student but prior to that I worked in the health service up until September of this year. In Dec 2004, the tax office being used changed my tax code from the normal allowance (the one where it is like 465L) to BR, for no reason.
I tried to call the tax office and they said I would have to wait until April 2005so I could forward them my P46(?? sorry can't remember if that is the right one, the end of year form you get) and then they would look at refunding me. I did so but I didn't receive a rebate for that year but I did receive a rebate for 2002-2003 for over £1500.
I was still on the BR tax code right up until I left my job in Sep. This was despite me filling in the form at my employers several times that said 'I this is my only job'.
I'm now due to start a new part time job and I am dreading being put back on BR tax.
I think I am owed money from Dec 2004 until Sep 2006 and I am now being told again I have to wait for next April before they will look at giving me a refund.
I actually only earnt £3500 last year due to illness and part time 'bank' work that I did so I was even under the threshold for paying tax.
Can anyone advise how to go about getting the IR to have a look once again at my case or do I really have to wait til next year?
Thanks in advance.

There's three different tax years here, 04/05, 05/06 and the current year 06/07. The best way to claim is in writing but you may be able to do it over the phone.
The first thing to do is sort out your current year tax records. Ask the new employer for form P46 and ensure you complete it correctly. This will likely give you the emergency tax code that is a lot better than it sounds and certainly better than BR.
Within about 4 weeks all your tax records will be transferred to the tax office that deals with your new employer. At this point you can request they look into whether any repayment is due. You do not have to wait until April for the current year repayment, unless you have had a lot of employers since April 2006 and your records are in a mess.
The best course of action would be to list in date order who you have worked for since April 2004. Include any periods where you weren't working, or when you claimed a social security benefit. Send this together with any original P45s and P60s that you have (keep photocopies) for the period in question, together with a brief note stating you wish them to check whether a repayment is due or not.
If you can, quote the Tax/PAYE reference for each employer - this is particularly important if you cannot provide a P45/P60.
An example letter...Dear Sir/Madam:
My name is:
My address is:
My National Insurance Number is:
I believe I have paid too much tax over the last three tax years and would appreciate if you could look at my records and issue any repayment that is due. For your information I include my employment history below and enclose any P45s/P60s that I have.
April 2004 - December 2004: No income (student)
December 2004: Casual work with Woolworths (PAYE ref ???/?)
January 2005 - June 2005: Claimed job-seekers
June 2005 - October 2006: Worked with HBOS (PAYE ref ???/????)
etc
This would allow them to check their records against your list, and would allow them to fill any gaps that might exist. If such gaps exist you may have to wait for the repayment while they contact your former employers for details.
It should also allow them to issue the correct code to your new employer, which would enable them to calculate and issue any repayment due for the current year. Only if you haven't paid enough tax for the year would this not happen.
P45 = Provided when you leave an employer or a taxable benefit claim ends
P60 = End of year document provided by an employer if you were working for them at 5th April.Quidco savings: £499.49 tracked, £494.35 paid.0 -

No, but why on earth did you dredge up a completely unrelated (not to mention two year old!) thread to ask that?!
If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -

:embarasse I did a search on google and this was the first to come up, and it directly took me to the post by Hoddie, who mentioned Woolworths. I only noticed the date after I'd posted.0
