What can I claim for? Employed and also self employed

Hi there, wondered if someone could help me out. I am employed in an office job 32.5 hours per week for which I pay tax through work. I work from home on evenings and weekends as a typist and am registered as self employed for them earnings.

I wondered what I could claim for when I do my tax bill? I recently had to buy a new PC as my last one blew up, can I claim this money back? Also, can I claim towards the electricity, paper, ink, etc. I use for my job at home?

Thanks,
:j

You cant actually "claim" the money back as such.

What happens is that you firstly have to work out the business/personal use percentage of each item and then claim the business proportion as a business expense on your tax return , this in turn will reduce your tax bill.

So , if for example you have purchased the new computer at a cost of £300 and you decide that 50% of the time you will use it for business purposes and the other 50% the time you will use it for your own personal use , you would record £150 as a business expense on your tax return ( worked out using the 50% business use of a £300 computer).

You can then use the same method to calculate all other expenses you incur in running your business.

Claiming for the use of your home as your business premises isnt something I have experience of as I dont do it but I hear that there is a flat amount of £3 per week which can be claimed without HMRC questioning it .
The loopy one has gone :j
