Declaring extra earnings

in Cutting tax
Hi
For the last few weeks I have been doing some leaflet deliveries to help promote my partners new business. As I we are struggling for cash, she and her partners have offered to pay me for this, (just £4/hour but every little helps).
In order to get payment I had to fill out an invoice and they gave me a cheque.
As we are short of disposable income i'm hoping to do more in future weeks.
Do I need to delare it as I work full time for the local government also?
It seems such a shame if I have to as I am barely covering the cost of fuel ect to get to the areas which i leaflet!
Any help would be really appreciated

Sorry but you will need to pay tax on this income and will need therefore to tell the taxman and declare for tax credits (if you claim those) and other income dependent benefits.
Keep a note of the miles you travel as you can claim at 40p per business mile as deduction from income and reduce the tax (1000 x 40p = 400 expense tax deductible). You need to be aware that the rate drops to 25p a mile once you go over 10,000 business miles in the tax year but I doubt if this will apply to you on such a short term project.
Have a look here for more information:

Thanks taxing, i feared as much.
I'm one of those unfortunates who have no dependants and just pay into the system rather than getting anything back such as tax credits.
My wages are relatively good but my level of debt is such that I barely have enough to live on and hoped that by working for next to nothing i can help my situation.
I'll declare my earnings and be sure to claim back my expenses.
Thanks again0 -
You might possibly be able to get it included in your paye tax as other taxable income?

But if you are only getting paid £4 per hour and have to supply your own petrol out of that money, is it even worth your while doing? You must be earning a lot less than minimum wage, and then paying 20% tax on what little you do get.0
