Nothing - except that it mashes potato (which is fine if that's what you want) rather than ricing it.

It achieves the same end result.

Not remotely, I'm afraid. Try both and you'll see what I mean - riced potato is not mashed potato.

It's a bit like saying that all pasta's exactly the same, just because it has the same ingredients.

I think the point they made on the programme was that if you wanted to make gnocchi it was better to use a ricer as a masher may leave lumps which wouldn't be very nice to have lumpy gnocchi! If you don't mind lumps in your mash or your gnocchi then it wouldn't matter one way or the other..I love a good debate about spuds. :rotfl:

interesting. Had no idea ricing was a different result to mashing...I liked the idea because it looks so easy compared to mashing but perhaps I need to stick to mashing?? :o

There's nothing like taking your frustration out on some poor hapless potatoes.

I bought my ricer from M&S a few years back when there was a 3 for 2 offer on. I use it several times a week. It is so much easier to make mash with than a masher. Bung the spuds through add a big glug of cream and butter and stir. Nom nom:D
