OS Meat

watched The Great British Food Revival last night. I am a great fan of Clarissa Dixon Wright and she was in top form, so muchso that I was inspired to call at our specialist butchers and buy a joint of British Long Horn rib of beef.The beef of Old England. Am so looking forward to cooking it tomorrow and then eating it with yorkshire pud.:jThats real old style.:j
Anyone else "into" rare breed meats?

    We've grown our own Gloucester Old Spot pork :) We went on one of Tony York's courses - he was the pig man towards the end of that programme :T

    We buy Berkshire and Large Black pork, and Welsh Black lamb.

    We have kept several rare breeds of hens for eggs and meat - Light Sussex, Buff Orpington, and many others :)

    Yes, although I think the main reason the traditional breeds are tastier is because they are much fattier, and most flavour in meat comes from the fat (and juiciness). Modern hybrid breeds are much, much leaner.

    Get to eat some Tamworth pig now and then, very nice, and I get Gloucester old spot bacon as a treat from the farmers market sometimes. I love old style pork even if it is a bit hairy. I don't know why but when you buy these breeds they always have bristles. Maybe the new breeds have also had a lot of their hairiness and hardiness bred out of them, being indoor raised, to be more palatable.
