I have figure crunched until they can't be crunched any more!! I am definitely a convert. As soon as the credit card is paid - will tell the Bank to cap the figure to £1,000 instead of the £12,200 they insist I could afford. I have been very very weak but a new me has emerged and have learnt - mainly through reading this wonderful site - to be strong. Thank you everyone x

    Hi Cushion,
Firstly well done ! realisation is the first step to recovery. Good to hear about your endowment. Once you've paid off credit card and done all the other stuff mentioned by the others, maybe it would be worth looking at your mortgage.

One of the ways we got totally debt and mortgage free, was a flexible mortgage. We are with the one account, which is a current account and savings account, and mortgage rolled into 1, saving interest on your mortgage against any balance or savings in there. This saved me an absolute fortune...to the extent that we paid off a 65 k mortgage in three and a half years ! And now our mortgage pays us interest...a whole 19p for Feb. lol !

    I hope this helps.

WHOO HOO Just phoned RAC. Been with them since 1990 and still paying over £120 per year! I said that I was thinking about leaving them when my renewal comes up because I have been looking around and can get the same cover for cheaper. She immediately said I was eligible for a 50% discount (shame I had to phone for them to tell me that though!!!!!) My renewal is now £65.50. (Happy girl)

Thank you for that. I have also been on the phone (today) to London & Country - which is a Company recommended here. So far, he thinks he can get my accident and illness protection on the mortgage down from £84 to £26 double whoo hoo!! He is also looking at mortgage quotes as my fixed rate with Santander ends in August. I will ask him about the One Account. I'm so excited. Why oh why have we been working all hours and just keeping our heads above water. I feel as if we might just have thrown it down the drain. This is sooooo liberating! Thanks people for your support x

Good news about the mortgage payment protection! I was just about to post that we were paying (before we cancelled it) £18 a month for the payment protection so £26 sounds about right!

Don't know what your phonebills are like but I have a really nice Blackberry and I only pay £28 a month through Orange (18 month contract). Most phone companies let you switch to a lower tariff after a certain amount of time as well so that could be worth looking into?
