Getting OT but loans were introduced in 1990 - initially the grant was frozen and the increase made up each year of increasing amounts of loan. Later the grant was scrapped altogether.

As for the site - interesting bedfellows - not sure the Tories business buddies would be too chuffed if everyone got serious about reducing debts - they'd have to cut a lot of spending so business profits would suffer.

I was lucky enough to get a reduced grant for a couple of years- I just wanted to point out that it was definitely the Tories who brought in the loans, not Labour. I remember all the protests on campus against loans, poll tax etc etc... not that it got us anywhere but we tried

Tories bought in loans and froze grants.

Labour abolished grants completely and increased loans.

Labour bought in top-up fees (top-up that is rather than fees which they promised not to but being top-up that wasn't what they meant)

Labour bought in fees as well as top-up fees (because when they said no fees (except top-up ones that is) they meant no fees in first 2 terms).

    Everyone clear now....

  • What's with all the hype about using !!!!!! anyway. The guy on BBC breakfast this morning wouldn't shut up about it. Aren't they using the word to mean someone who is throwing money away. Or is that stating the obvious?! Sorry if I've been a bit dim. I think they thought it'd be funny, especially as the site seems to be aimed at 18-25ish year olds.

And I'm with Mrs Sparkle. They're all ****ards!! The 16k I owe the student loan company means I'll be paying the 9% "graduate tax" for a very long time.
