New MFW

HI all,
I have used this website a couple of years ago and since have had a crazy couple of years, having had a spinal fusion June 09 and am still not back to work as having a few problems with back issues!!

So my husband and myself have had a rough time of it with money etc, but we dont have loans or credit cards etc, so we are quite sensible and how we have managed to pay our mortgage every month is still to me quite shocking!!

I have decided that we should now start to look at making overpayments and rang the building society and have made our first overpayment of £50 this month, we set up a standing order so that we can adjust it, and have now the famous mortgage pig in our kitchen window.

Having reduced some of our outgoings eg, mobile phone contracts, as we have 4 in the house due to our two daughters having them as well, the money we have saved is what is going to make the overpayments on the mortgage.

With the balance being just over £136,000 and using the overpayment calculater on this site it has spurred me on to start this and the face that my husband doesnt want to still be paying our mortgage when he should be retiring is enough to make me want to do this. With him on baord and already nearly £50 in our Mortgage Piggy, i feel that we are taking control and looking at our mortagage as a loan, so that we want to pay if off as soon as posible, but every penny counts, if anyone has any advice etc, I would love to hear from you,
best wishes to you all
love Layla x

Hello :hello:, well done on joining the mfw's, the best idea is to read lots of other peoples diaries to get some ideas, thats what i did.
I would also suggest looking at the oldstyle boards for lots of cheap cooking ideas, you can save a fortune by cutting back on groceries.
maybe think about joining some survey sites to earn extra pennies, anyway best of luck.

PS. Also perhaps do a statement of account to see if others can suggest ways of cutting back that might have been missed

Hi and welcome - that mortgage overpayment calculator is such an incentive to boost your overpayments as much as you can.

    Good luck with your journey.

  • Thanks for making me feel welcome, I just feel so much happier to finally make a start on chipping away at our mortgage and we are still looking at ways to save on the outgoings every month to the point where i have managed to talk to DH and get him to think about stopping the extra money we pay to SKy just to have HD channels, so that could be another £10 a month added to the overpayment standing order, any other ideas would be so welcome, hope you all have a great weekend x

Welcome :) Definitely have a skim of diaries and the daily things thread - lots of little tips there.

    Do things like:
    * review your DDs (Direct Debits not Dear Daughters :rotfl:) to see if you have any you no longer need
    * use top cashback for online shopping - pennies back on ebay, pounds on insurances and switching gas and elec
    * look at your Mr T vouchers as a way of paying for magazine subscriptions and meals out, instead of using your cash
    * use mysupermarket to see where is cheapest for your groceries
Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.
