Getting sacked due to a rumor??

Hello,
Last week I returned to a bar where i used to work 2 years ago, yesterday i got sacked..
Apparently all returning staff are to be vetted by head of security, apparently when i left there was a rumor started that i put my ex gf into hospital (she used to be a supervisor there) now this is 100% false.(rumor was probably started by someone no longer there)
Currently they are saying that i shouldnt have been reemployed in the first place as the H+R guy never went through head of security and just employed me straight away..
IS this the case that i can be sacked due to a false rumor being started? i would imagine they would need to know who started it and also that it was true? is this the case?
Many thanks
Dan

If you've been there for less than a year you have very few rights tbh.0

You can be sacked for pretty much any reason in your first year, as long as it's not a discriminatory one. As you've only had 1 week's service, just move on and be grateful you had a lucky escape!
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
As above, but if they have said this AND you have it writing you could sue for slander.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

Sorry, but what does "vetted by the head of security" mean?
They ask you a few questions? Check you out on Facebook? Go through your pockets? Carry out a CRB check? Etc....etc.....0 -
