Film Extras

Hi,
I responded to an advert for extras for a film called 'Dead End' (filming in Nottingham 7th-12th May 2011).
I received an email today from the casting company providing details of what is required. All seems in order, however, the company are asking for a refundable £50 deposit for accommodation 'held against any damage done to your room during the duration of your stay'.

Has anyone done this kind of work before? Is this a standard thing or do you think it's a scam.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    SCAM in BIG CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!

No reputable company will ask you for money up front in this way. Agencies will expect a commission and usually a registration fee, but often this is taken from the first or second booking, or at the very least after a thorough registration process. Steer well clear.

In addition to the above, this very scam has been mentioned on MSE numerous times. Do a search for extras/ tv and film work.

who do you go through to be an extra?
i have no acting experience but would love to be an extra!

I would pay the £50 direct to hotel but not to the casting company!

Seems odd to me. Imagine, if they send that to 50,000 people and each of them give a £50 deposit. That's a whole lotta money.

I'd never give cash to an agency etc up front like that.

They're not an agency, just a scam company there to collect your money. So many people have fallen for this scam - they pay the money, turn up, then hear nothing ever again from this get up.

If they ask for money do not send any, you shouldn't need to pay any money up front

This isn't right I don't think. The producers would normally have no involvement in accomodation for extras, and certainly wouldn't ask for cash up front. There IS a film called Dead End scheduled to be made this year (see IMDB) but I think it more likely that the people who placed these ad's are aware of that, rather than that they are the producers.
