Hi everyone,
I've just watched an advert for detol. It claims it kills 99.9% of germs. i try not to take much notice of too many adverts because I believe most of it is just huge corporations with lots of money using their brand to make us believe their product is better.
But this advert got me wondering. Is my tesco basics (Im a student!) bleach any worse than this product? Does mine kill 99.9% or bacteria? Or should I go out and buy detol because it only leaves 0.01% of germs on my work surface.
This got me thinking, how much worse are my other products. Is there much difference?
I know that on MSE there is the old discussion of "things companies don't want us to know" bit this is different. Should I be buying Detol or are basic other products just as effective?

Bear in mind that there are many bacteria floating about in the air and also on everything which we are then going to put on that surface. I ask myself how long it will stay so sterile? One second? One minute? one hour? Is such sterility actualy good for us? I doubt it. It doesn't do our immune systems any good living in such a sterile world. I think it's nonsense. I but own brand "antiseptic disinfectant" and I do use bleach-boiling water and the like if I have been chopping up meat or something but for everyday wiping of worktops I just use a little household cleaner-whatever I have to hand. None of us ever get upset stomachs either. Basic food hygeine is important, fancy brands and fancy prices are a no-no. If you are well and your place is clean that is all you need.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

I agree with the above reply,I think a lot of people have become obsessed with killing all germs and bacteria,so much so that their immune systems can't fight off germs because they never come into contact with any.
I do wipe down my work surfaces, but I don't obsess about germs and I never have tummy bugs or hardly ever even a cold.
I lived on a farm when I was a child and my mother didn't have all disinfectant sprays that are available today and I'm sure there were lots of occasions when I ate food without washing my hands first, after being out in the farmyard with animals, but I was never ill.0 -
I like Dettol liquid antiseptic/disinfectant and always have a bottle in the house..............I like the smell.:o
I wouldn't buy any of the other Dettol products though, I go for cheaper brands of air fresheners or cleaners........and use bleach.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. I wipe down all surfaces with washing up liquid and i havent been ill because of it yet. Our body is built to take a fair few germs so whats the point of spraying everything in sight (plus isnt all this going to go on your food as well)Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

I used to work in a microbiology lab testing for nasties in food like salmonella and listeria.
We used to wash the benches and floors with a bucket of hot water with mixture of Makro multisurface cleaner and sodium hypochlorite in(ordinary household bleach is a watered down version of this chemical as our version would burn your skin!).
If it's good enough to clean a lab where there has been lots of bacteria present, it's good enough to clean a home! Here I go again on my own....0 -
