what area of work are you in as tssa represent mainly office based staff and frontline on track is RMT . unite as a union dont represent any frontline staff at the moment. so you need to pick the union that can give you best representation and are relevant to your work.

    What Garry said ^
Ask the people you work with which one they have joined.

like a previous poster put ask your work mates what union they are in.

all i will say is that unite as a union are not involved in pay deals or re-orgs or represent staff in the discipline that i work in within the railway industry . when we recently got displaced the only unions involved were RMT/TSSA and we have got a few staff members who joined UNITE a while ago.

the original poster could be a train driver so would then join aslef i believe an not rmt/unite/tssa/unison.

the original poster just needs to ask his work mates what union they are in and ask about the others to find out if they are involved or not.

I'd ask about the local shop steward, who would actually be the one giving you guidance and support? Then find out the union!! Just my honest opinion, I've worked with some amazing reps, but the rest of the union was a bit awful.

Out of the ones mentioned I would go with the TSSA, slightly more forward thinking than the RMT and less militant which in todays atmosphere is probably a plus.

Overall though find out about your local rep its more important you get along with them than the higher ups you will never see as they will be the one defending you in a local capacity.

Looking at the OP's other posts, I see she works at a station, for a TOC. So maybe RMT would be best then, yes they are militant but they are very willing to protect their members. I'd join RMT without a second thought if I worked in a suitable job, as it is I work in an office so joined TSSA.

thankyou for your replies i dont work for TOCs but for the company that owns the stations the union rep we have for our staff cant be that great because no one will use him if they have a problem. most of the staff are RMT and some are not with a union so cant get any advice really from anyone..
