debt letters keep coming and they are not mine.

hi there, posted before when i received letters for someone else and was told to mark them return to sender. I have been doing this, but they keep coming.
The original ones were from O2 but now they are arriving from Lowells,(maybe should not have opened but felt i have the right to know what is being held under my address)
The worrying thing is, they have my christian name but wrong surname, so i think they think i am actually this person. I do not and never have had an account with o2.
Sending them back is not working, they just send more and i want it to stop. I dont really fancy calling an 0844 number at my expense. Is there a letter i can send?
My partner says to ignore but i want to nip this in the bud, any advice please?:)

Your partner is right. It's not your job to prove you don't owe a debt, it's thier job to prove you do. A debt that isn't even in your name is no more yours than one in the name of Victoria Beckham or David Cameron. Nothing is held against your address that can affect you, thats a popular misconception. This in no way is about you. It in no way affects you. You are geting frightened of an outcome that can not happen. Get your husband to sort the post and either bin them or return to sender. Return to sender does eventually work, but it takes a while (18 months in the case of letters for the previous tennant where I live). In the mean time read this... http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/credit-rating-credit-score

If you're still scared tell us exactly what of, every last fear, no matter how silly it might sound and we can dispell them for you properly. You wont be thinking anything that many DFW's before you haven't thought at some time or other.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

hi thanks for your reply, im worrying as it says the next step is Red collections and that might mean someone coming to my house. i dont want that in front of my neighbours even if they are looking for someone else.
Is there actually any way i can stop them sending these.
i have seen template letters on here but thats more if the letters are actually been sent to your proper name.
This person has never lived here as the person in the house before me was a pensioner who had been here for twenty years.

You won't nip anything in the bud by phoning them, in fact you may well encourage them to start calling you!

As the letters aren't actually addressed to you there is actually nothing to nip in the bud anyway, so please just carry on ignoring them! I still get post from people who lived in my house two or three owners before I moved in, I just return it to sender if it looks important, or ditch it into the recycling if it's obviously a selling mailshot.

It's annoying, I know, but nothing can happen to you if you either just return them or bin them, so carry on doing just that. :)

Oh, and if anyone does turn up on the doorstep (which is VERY unlikely!), they have no more rights than the pizza flyer deliverer - just tell them that you have never heard of the person they are after, they have certainly never lived here, and to go away - if they argue, up that to 'go away or I'm calling the police' - you have the right to do so, as they are trespassing.

Remember, the law is on your side, so you don;t need to be scared of these bullies!

I have letters and calls for 2 previous tenants, does that explain my high insurance?.
I just send them back, if they ring tell I them to bog off and you'll see them in court if they want my money but they should not discus without confirming id.
As said completely ignore them unless it is addressed to yourself, dont ring ever as they will try and get money whether you owe them or not.

Point being if you dont pay there is nothing they can do other than take you to court, and if they did they would look absolute idiots as you are not the person that owes money.

We've lived where we are for over 4 years now and we still get them for the previous occupants! One popped through the door on Monday in fact.

I just bin them now - sending them back doesn't stop them, ringing the DCA doesn't stop them (they just get sold on and then the next company starts sending letters again!), so now they just go in the bin.

Never had anyone turn up at the door.

At a rented place we lived at a few years back, we had court papers land on the doorstep for the previous tenant - I just called the court up and explained the situation, and they sorted it out their end. We never had anything else through.

It's really nothing to worry about, as previous posters have said. Just bin the letters and get on with enjoying your life. :)

Can you elaborate a bit please Lor6126 as to what you fear will happen if a debt collector turns up for the person who is not you? Don't worry if it sounds irrational.

I'm still getting letters for someone who lived here 15+ years ago as well as the previous occupiers. I've been living where I am for nearly 11 years now! I tried returning to sender for the first few years but have now given up. Can't be bothered after all this time when they've been informed.
