Radical Change of Working Conditions.

Dear All,

I currently work a shift pattern of 2 days & 2 nights of 12 hour shifts 7am-7pm & 7pm-7am, after which we have 4 days off. We do not receive A/L but every 7 weeks we earn 17 days off. As part of our agreement, we also cover all Bank Holidays and the councils Xmas closure which this year amounts to 7.5 days.

The team originally consisted of 5 shift workers and 1 supervisor. The supervisors position was made redundant because of her refusal to work shifts and to save money. We agreed in principal to share her work load because of the current economic climate and as a gesture of goodwill.

A fifth shift member left the team and the position up until now has been covered by relief workers. Management however have seized the opportunity to make this position redundant, despite the fact that the Chief Executive has stated that no more redundancies are required. Our department head is now imposing a radical shift pattern change were we only work nights, weekends, bank holidays and the Xmas closure period with 8 different start & finish times and shift lengths varying from 8, 9, 10 & 12 hours.

We have been in a two week consultation period, were we have been TOLD the change will take place. HR have been involved and done nothing even though we have a family friendly and work to life balance policy. HR do not respond to Emails or telephone callsOur department boss just told me he does not worry about such policy's.

The executive party making the decision about making the post redundant are basing their decision in the belief that this will save money. When in reality to implement this saving it cost nearly the same. Also the duties we covered are allegedly going to be covered by admin staff who are receiving an enhancement and refusing to alter their duties by even an hour each day because they have family and it does not form them incurring any shift enhancement as they work Monday to Friday.

To make matters worse we are seeing tens of thousands spent on fixtures and fittings and simply told they come from a different budget. I feel that if the chief executive and local councillors knew the true facts they may well intervene. Any suggestions please?

Thanks
