Who would give an 18 year old a loan for £1k? (Employed part time)

So I'm employed part time and am starting a new job in a few weeks which pays about £140 a week, which isn't alot apparently, but it's good enough for me. I'm currently at Sixth Form college and due to start University in September. I plan to keep my job part time throughout university.

I need a computer basically, my one died a few weeks ago and I'm looking to buy one that will last me in the long term (e.g. 4 years of University!)

I have some money saved up, but am short about £1k, I was thinking of buying a cheap one for the time being, but that works out to be much more expensive in the long run.

Some people are probably going to comment on the price of the computer, but I use the processing power and a standard laptop that would suit an everyday person wouldn't suit what I use it for.

I've had a credit card for about 4 months and have paid it off in full, but I highly doubt that would make a blind bit of difference to my credit rating. I'm looking for a 12 month loan, so that way I can get it paid off in a reasonable amount of time, and not incur too much in interest repayments.

Any ideas? (please be gentle:rotfl:)

£1000....... you looking to buy a top of the range gaming pc?

You can get something future proof for much less than that. Would you be looking to buy a pre built PC or construct it yourself?

You're £1k SHORT! - how much have you saved up? £0.50p?

What on earth do you think you need huge processing power for?

Mid-range, replace after 2 years always works out cheaper and more cost effective than £1300 machines with an excess of power over needs.

Medion from Aldi are really good specs cost , and only cost about £600-£700 3 year warrantys. As other said apple mac otherwise which will be nowhere near the amount you want to loan.

I'm an ex-gamer, used to spend £1400 on kit, 500 on LCD and the rest.

For University I have a £300 laptop. Would have been cheaper but I went for a ThinkPad for build quality.

I would be very surprised if £600 of kit off OcUK wouldn't suit you well. No computer is going to last 4 years on max settings on every game. You're much better off gradually upgrading as you go along (or reconsidering whether you'll keep up the gaming in University... I found there are much more exciting things on offer.)

Yeah my brother bought loads of technical equipment and is now in bad debt. Things just escalate, you want this, then that, then the updates...

Buy a decent laptop. I never had a laptop at uni, I had a desktop computer, but it would have helped more having a laptop, more portability.

Also as has been said before, there are better things to do at uni than going on your computer! Don't be unsociable and you'll have more fun - spend the money on something more constructive - like booze!!! lol

To be quite honest I went from 8+ hours a day on the PC to basically not using it within a term of starting University.

Ive just started uni this year and have both a PC and laptop. I use my PC everday and would be at a loss without it. Whilst in comparrison my laptop is hardly touched. But I think this will change when im in a shared house next year commuting to uni.
