Hi again guys, just wondering for anyone who has been or currently is selling jewellery/crafts to local shops - do you have to register yourself with HMRC to do this? Do you need insurance? Somebody mentioned you do have to, and it suddenly seems more daunting and complicated now - I stupidly thought you'd have to be earning a certain amount to have to do this, as I only expect to make a very small amount of money - maybe £40 profit - if even that! Seems a lot of hassle, and I have NO clue what to do or what I should be doing. Any help & advice greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

You will need to register with HMRC and do an annual tax return form, for low amounts you just fill in two figures - how much you've made, how much you've spent - and they tell you how much tax you pay.All4ABargain wrote: »Hi again guys, just wondering for anyone who has been or currently is selling jewellery/crafts to local shops - do you have to register yourself with HMRC to do this? You'll need public liability insurance. This would cover you if somebody had a nasty reaction to your materials, or if your table fell over and slashed somebody's leg.
#431 here gives you a company that sells insurance: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/574013
Or there's a special craftsperson insurance available from http://www.craftinsurance.co.uk/cost-ind.htm
£30-80/year should cover you for several £million of liability.
Imagine if you decided to do a nice Xmas table, lit one tea-light and somebody's dog knocked it over and it set fire to the stall next door, then the whole hall.....0 -
