No set wages date

Hi

The company my husband works for doesn't have a set date that they are paid by. I work for a different company and get paid on 21st of each month, whereas my husband gets paid before the end of the month or even sometimes on the last day of the month. I can't see anything in his staff handbook relating to when they get paid but surely not having a set date each month isn't right? His holiday pay is also a bit unusual, in that he takes a day/week off and doesn't get paid that month for the time off but every 3 months he gets his holiday pay in a lump. Or is this quite normal??

He's worked there for 4 years now and I've always found it a bit odd - but its his younger brother who owns & runs the company so my husband doesn't like to rock the boat!

I've worked jobs where I was paid on the last Friday of the month, the last day of the month or every four weeks. Nothing strange about it.

My partner is in the same boat, he gets paid supposedly on the last Friday of each month but it's done manually by the company owner so sometimes it's a few hours late, or whatever, and we have to make sure we're not relying on it definitely being there for DDs etc.

There are all sort of weird arrangements going on there like "work this day that you had booked off on holiday and we'll pay you x3" but then the actual pay shows up whichever payday the guy remembers to manually add it on.

Doesn't seem all that rare, but I'm with you on the weirdness.
  • My employer is same as your husbands. I do not know when i will get paid.

the reason for this is that our accounts is in Head Office - Which is in Germany.

Accounts process payment but then send it to an accountant in London to process. The accountant then sends it by BACS to my bank. So the date varies depending on when the London Accountant gets it and when my bank processes it.

I generally, rule as humb, just say I'll get it on the last working day of the month, then im not waiting on it

It's a bit of an odd way to do it if he works regular hours each week / month, but it sort of makes sense if his hours change from week to week, or at short notice.

Small companies can be a nightmare. I'd sugest on the payday issue he have a chat with his boss to explain the problems it causes and see if they would regularise it. Assuming he has a contract it must say when he can expect to be paid (monthly, weekly, fortnightly, etc). With regard to holiday I didn't think rolling up holiday was lawful anymore (only for term time workers) so it might be worth having a word to find out if anything can be done. They might just be ignorant and continue to do things because they have always been done that way (don't suppose he gets a cash wage packet from a hatch in the office?!). Don't think the worst yet. Once you have your answers you can then decide if you can live with it or not. Or pursude the employer to change and update their methods?

Oh but also listen to Sue ^^^ if he works irregular hours or is hourly paid and not salaried then he must just be paid on submission of a timesheet which is irregular.

Thanks for the replies so far....

Ok Hubby is hourly paid and does fill in a timesheet, which are handed in every friday. We know that overtime is only paid up to the 20th of the month usually ish and anything after that is carried over to next month.

I just find it a bit odd that one month he can be paid on the 21st, the next month might be 24th of the month, and the next month might be 27th of the month etc etc. It'd just be nice to know that he is getting paid on 28th of each month, or the last friday of each month, or every 4 weeks. He's always paid each month we just never know when!
