How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa?

Having been reading the thread about rubbishy christmas presents, I thought I'd start up this one about when you stopped believing in Santa.

My little boy (7 going on 8) still believes in Santa which I think is great - except, his list this year is about 3 ft long because he thinks Santa doesn't have to pay for anything!!!! I explained that mummy gives him the money so that he can get the presents! I know at some point he'll stop believing which is a shame, but you loose the innocence of youth at some point!

Was going to post this on the aforementioned thread as it was carpy presents from "santa" that made me think - hey - there isn't a Santa! My mum would always go all out on getting someone else to write the letter from Santa for us (she's got really distinctive handwriting) and get presents wrapped in different paper etc), but on this year - must have been about 8/9, maybe 10 years old - I knew the game was up - she put in our stockings a couple of tangerines, 5 pound coins wrapped in silver foil  and the letter from Santa had been written on, (I'm :rotfl: just remembering it) - the back of the piece of card that you get inside shirts packets!!!:rotfl: I remember saying to my sister - I don't think there is a Santa! We still wet our selves with laughter when we remember this!

So over to everyone else - when did you stop believing? I personally want my son to think there is a Santa for as long as possible!!

when i was that age my parents told me that santa bought my stocking presents but that the presents under the tree came from them. They said he didnt have room to bring lots of big presents on his sleigh!

I have never told my children, grandchildren or greatgrand children that there is no Father Christmas.

I think most of them know but not from me.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I think they contton on at about year 5 or 6 (9/10/11). In my class, year 5, some of them know but a lot don't. My children were told at 11 but we still 'believe' and carry on the traditions of putting out whisky, carrot, mince pies etc!!

  • I think i stopped believing when i was about 6, but then i have a older sister, who told me as soon as she found out.

I also remember testing my parents by asking for Father Christmas' autograph for 2 years in a row. I then questioned them about it when they didn't match! What a right little madam i was back then!

No one ever told me, I just grew out of believing, don't remember the exact age but probably round the 9 ish age.

Last year I hit upon a problem of how to get my eldest to say thank you for pressies when he thought they were from Santa (previously I'd said thank you on his behalf). My sister said she told her kids that friends/relatives bought the pressies and sent them to Santa, he just delivered. I decided not to go completely along with that cos I think my son might just ask me to cut out the middle-man so he could have his toys early:rolleyes: :D , but I gave a variation that we order the stuff from santa, or give him ideas of what people would like and we pay him for these goods which we then delivers.

My mum didn't encourage me to believe in santa, - she says because she felt so decieved and let down when she found out the awful truth herself. So I don't actually have any memory of believing in santa, which is a bit sad really :( I was also the awful child who went round the whole school telling everybody that santa didn't exist :o
