Supposedly taking Vit B tablets make you less attractive to the little critters. Some say it is an urban myth but it is cheap to do and cannot do any harm.

I too got bitten on the eyelid whilst away in the Caribbean a couple of years ago. Horrendous sight. I ended up seeing a local doctor and got an injection. He said he could improve it greatly in 24 hours or it would eventually go away of its own accord. I stumped up the $100 for the magic bullet! I was able to claim most of it back on travel insurance when I got home.

Funnily enough, I have also been bitten by a horsefly. It was years ago when my kids were little. It was on my foot and I could not get any footwear on. My doctor, with whom I had a good relationship at the time, actually came out to me on his way home. Those were the days:)

Since I gave birth to DS1 almost 19yrs ago I got a lot worse reaction to bites....they'd always bitten me loads but now I get the allergic reaction I didnt get before. I tried Vit B tablets...no use. I use Jungle Forumla and that seems to keep the beggars away but when I have been bitten and reacted I've got prescription antihistamines. You have to be careful taking them - can't drink with them, they can make you drowsy but they do actually work and take the swelling and itching away. When I was pregnant with DS2 I couldnt take them, we were clearing a tree down in the garden and I got bitten...honestly it looked like a horse had kicked me. If you go to a doctor tell him/her you have tried the OTC antihistamines and you should get a stronger one
  • I also have a bad reaction to bites in the summer I had a doozy in my wrist and my arm was swollen to almost my elbow, it looked, and felt like I had poured boiling water over my arm!

Two things to take the sting out (so to speak) Propolis Gel, I use one by SBC from QVC takes the heat and stops it itching and reduces the swelling (also has some kind of anitbac properties).

After being at work, no gel and nearly in tears I went to the nearest chemist type place, which is actually Chinese herbalist and was advised to buy some crushed pearl cream I think its called Queen Cream (or something like that, the label has come off) I do know on the back it has "use for skin like queenie niceyness" no idea whats in the stuff, in fact I dread to think, but within 20 mins of trying it the pain and heat had gone and a mixture of the two when I got home later that evening had the bite practically down to nothing by the morning.

I have tried the Vit B and a spoonful of Marmite (Vit B and yeast) when abroad and it works, I always forget when here though!!

I wish I would take my own advice!

I get eaten alive by mozzies too and have tried just about all of the above tips, some more successfully than others.

I also make up a solution of citronella oil and water, about 60 ml of water to about 10 drops of citronella and spray the house with it, especially round window frames, and just before going to bed I open up the bed and spray the bed too.

I also make a body oil with veg oil and citronella, which I rub onto exposed skin - evenings only - you mustn't expose skin coated with citrus oils to sunlight.

If you don't like citronella you could use any citrus oil, bergamot, lime etc or lavender oil. (Citronella and lavender tend to be the cheapest).

I also drink lots of tonic water (contains quinine).

Apparently if you are sitting out in the evening it's worth putting a piece of smelly blue cheese like stilton a few feet away from you. Apparently mozzies love it and they leave you alone. Not tried that one.

When I go to Spain I buy little patches which contain citronella that you stick on your wrists and ankles - you can buy them in the supermarkets. They were quite good, unfortunately I've not come across them here.

Also find the Avon skin so soft quite good.

I tried a supplement called Busy Bee - Holland & Barrett. Not that great for me but my friend swears by it.

I find that my bites leave marks for months. I now rub bio oil onto the marks (when the bite has healed) and that seems to speed up the fading process.

Get mosquito screens fitted, EuroNorris. They do work and you can at least sit in your house without worrying.

In the past, I've had to go to docs with bad mossie bites. Could not put foot to the floor. Also react badly to bee and wasp stings. I still have a hard lump on my arm from a 15 year old bee sting.

I put pure peppermint essential oil(10ml from eBay is very cheap) on the itchy site. Within a couple of minutes, it stops itching. Bliss!

I do end up smelling very minty, though. Lol.

Thanks, am going to ask doc for those when I see him on Friday morning. I usually get them for hayfever anyway.

They do help, but not as much as I'd like! lol. The bites are starting to subside a little today, thankfully. And I found the plug in mossie repellant, and sprayed the bed covers with mossie repellant, covered myself in Avon's Skin So Soft (which has citronella in it) and ate some Garlic bread last night. :rotfl: No new bites though! :D

I'd love to do that. Do you know if it's possible to have them temporarily fitted? ie, can be removed at any time? As we live in a rented apartment at the moment, so we need to get any modifications approved by the landlady (who's usually reasonable).

My Mum had that problem one year, with both ankles. Was horrid.

Wow! That bump ain't going anywhere is it?

Mossie screens need to be made to measure to fit each window and door precisely so doubt if they would serve as a temp solution for you. Did not realise you were in rented property, sorry.
Could you ask the landlady? Perhaps get a quote and then present her with your findings?
    Found this company on google:

I read somewhere that it was your blood type that made you more delicious. I react badly to bites and I rub some hydrocortisone cream and antihistamine cream on. Seems to help a bit. I also have a clicker which sends a mild electric shock to the bite area. I think it deadens the nerves temporarily so the itch is better but it is great for when you just have to scratch.
