Recipe Needed

Does anybody have a copy of the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book from the 70s? I am looking for a copy of the recipe for rock cakes that is in there. I know longer have the recipe unfortunately and I have never found another rock cake recipe that I like as help.

Sorry I realise this is not really a money saving question but if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Thanks

Marie

Hi, I don't know if this is the one, from Good housekeeping book !977 edition,

    100g 4oz Butter or marg
    225g 8 oz Plain Flour
    10ml 2 tsp Baking Powder
    pinch salt
2.5ml 1/2 level tsp mixed spice
grated rind of 1/2 a lemon
    100g 4oz Demerara sugar
100g 4 oz mixed dried fruit
    1 egg beaten
    about 5ml 1tsp milk

Rub fat into sifted flour, baking powder, salt and spice. Stir in rind sugar and fruit. Mix in egg and a little milk if needed to make a stiff consistency. Shape in to rough heaps on greased baking sheets. Bake in the oven at 200c for 15 to 20 mins. Makes 12.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi
This is from Marguerite Patten's Every day Cook Book 1973 and I still use it today .

    Rock Buns

    8oz SR flour
    4oz marg or butter
    4oz caster sugar
    4oz dried fruit
    1 egg
    appox 2 tbl spoon milk
    sugar to glaze

sieve flour rub in marge till it looks like fine breadcrumbs add sugar fruit beaten egg and enough milk to give a sticky consistency,
put the mixture in to 12 heaps on a well greased baking tray leaving room to spread.sprinkle with sugar ,
bake in hot oven 12--15 mins
    425--450f gas 6--7

I do put coconut instead of fruit or just plain and when on the tray press in the middle to make a small well and put in jam or lemon curd .
  • Thank you both for the recipes. The Good Housekeeping one sounds very similar to the recipe I used to have though not exactly the same so perhaps my Mum's copy was older or newer than I thought. I do like the idea of the Marguerite Patten version as well so will have to try both. I used to know the recipe off the top of my head but I've been a bit lapse in the baking department recently! x

My Good Housekeeping cookery book is from the 50's. The recipe in that one is different from the one posted above:

    12 oz Plain flour
    A pinch of salt
    3 tsps baking powder
    1/2 tsp grated nutmeg
    1/2 tsp mixed spice
    6 oz butter
    5 oz sugar
    3 oz currants
1 1/2 oz finely chopped candied peel
    1 beaten egg
    A little milk to mix

Grease a baking sheet and dredge it lightly with flour.
Sieve the dry ingredients and rub in the fat. Stir in the sugar, currants and peel and mix well.
Make a well in the centre and stir in the egg and enough milk to make a stiff mixture.
With a teaspoon and fork, place mixture in rocky heaps on the baking sheet and bake in a hot oven (450f/gas mark 8) for 15-20 minutes.

I made these last week and cooked them in my fan oven @200c.

From my 70's GH cookery book.

    ROCK BUNS

    4oz butter
    8 oz plain flour
    2 level tsp baking powder
    pinch salt
1/2 level tsp mixed spice (opt)
    grated rind 1/2 lemon
    4oz demerara sugar
    4 oz dried mixed fruit
    1 egg, beaten
about 1 tsp milk if necessary

    Grease 2 baking sheets
Sift together the flour, baking powder, spice and salt
Rub in the fat until like breadcrumbs
Stir in lemon rind, sugar and fruit.
Make a well in the centre and pour in the egg.
Mix together using a little milk if nec to give a stiff crumbly mix.
    Bind together using a fork.
Use 2 forks to shape mixture into rough heaps on the baking sheet
    Bake at 200degrees C for 15-20 mins
    Makes 12

Variation : replace fruit with 4oz stoned chopped dates and 1 tablesp chopped crystallised ginger.

Hope that's the one you want. Sounds good anyway - I might have a go !

Thats the recipe I have in MY GH book - cannot tell the year of publication as it has lost its cover and the front pages! but I think it must have been published in either '74 or 75!
  • You are wonderful. My husband accidentally shredded my handwritten copy of this recipe, which I had used for a street party. I no longer have my book, but had scrounged the recipe from a friend. I have been asked to make more for a fete on Saturday week, as all my friends love them and I was feeling a bit desperate. This is the exact recipe I needed and now it is in my computer, printed out, saved on an external drive and a memory stick - I am determined not to lose it again.

I always use brown sugar, not white and use half wholemeal flour and half white flour for added fibre and they taste amazing.
