Does anybody have a copy of the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book from the 70s? I am looking for a copy of the recipe for rock cakes that is in there. I know longer have the recipe unfortunately and I have never found another rock cake recipe that I like as help.
Sorry I realise this is not really a money saving question but if anyone can help I would be grateful.
Thanks
Marie

Hi, I don't know if this is the one, from Good housekeeping book !977 edition,
100g 4oz Butter or marg
225g 8 oz Plain Flour
10ml 2 tsp Baking Powder
pinch salt
2.5ml 1/2 level tsp mixed spice
grated rind of 1/2 a lemon
100g 4oz Demerara sugar
100g 4 oz mixed dried fruit
1 egg beaten
about 5ml 1tsp milk
Rub fat into sifted flour, baking powder, salt and spice. Stir in rind sugar and fruit. Mix in egg and a little milk if needed to make a stiff consistency. Shape in to rough heaps on greased baking sheets. Bake in the oven at 200c for 15 to 20 mins. Makes 12.
Hope this helps!0 -
Hi
This is from Marguerite Patten's Every day Cook Book 1973 and I still use it today .
Rock Buns
8oz SR flour
4oz marg or butter
4oz caster sugar
4oz dried fruit
1 egg
appox 2 tbl spoon milk
sugar to glaze
sieve flour rub in marge till it looks like fine breadcrumbs add sugar fruit beaten egg and enough milk to give a sticky consistency,
put the mixture in to 12 heaps on a well greased baking tray leaving room to spread.sprinkle with sugar ,
bake in hot oven 12--15 mins
425--450f gas 6--7
I do put coconut instead of fruit or just plain and when on the tray press in the middle to make a small well and put in jam or lemon curd .0 -
Thank you both for the recipes. The Good Housekeeping one sounds very similar to the recipe I used to have though not exactly the same so perhaps my Mum's copy was older or newer than I thought. I do like the idea of the Marguerite Patten version as well so will have to try both. I used to know the recipe off the top of my head but I've been a bit lapse in the baking department recently! x0

My Good Housekeeping cookery book is from the 50's. The recipe in that one is different from the one posted above:
12 oz Plain flour
A pinch of salt
3 tsps baking powder
1/2 tsp grated nutmeg
1/2 tsp mixed spice
6 oz butter
5 oz sugar
3 oz currants
1 1/2 oz finely chopped candied peel
1 beaten egg
A little milk to mix
Grease a baking sheet and dredge it lightly with flour.
Sieve the dry ingredients and rub in the fat. Stir in the sugar, currants and peel and mix well.
Make a well in the centre and stir in the egg and enough milk to make a stiff mixture.
With a teaspoon and fork, place mixture in rocky heaps on the baking sheet and bake in a hot oven (450f/gas mark 8) for 15-20 minutes.
I made these last week and cooked them in my fan oven @200c.0 -

Mix together using a little milk if nec to give a stiff crumbly mix.

Thats the recipe I have in MY GH book - cannot tell the year of publication as it has lost its cover and the front pages! but I think it must have been published in either '74 or 75!0 -
You are wonderful. My husband accidentally shredded my handwritten copy of this recipe, which I had used for a street party. I no longer have my book, but had scrounged the recipe from a friend. I have been asked to make more for a fete on Saturday week, as all my friends love them and I was feeling a bit desperate. This is the exact recipe I needed and now it is in my computer, printed out, saved on an external drive and a memory stick - I am determined not to lose it again.
I always use brown sugar, not white and use half wholemeal flour and half white flour for added fibre and they taste amazing.
