We have bought a house that was previously tenanted. It has a key meter and I am pretty convinced that it is not dfw!How easy would it be to go over to quarterly billing?

you will probably have to pay to have the meter removed and changed to quarterly billing, I think it's £40 depending on the supplier.
We had exactly this when we moved in here, but I did some checking online and found Ebico's pre-pay services were cheaper than what we were paying on DD Billing in the old house, so I stuck with it (too tight to pay the £40 to have the meter removed and changed to billing - especially when there was no difference in the prices!) we changed to Ebico and our bills are now about 45% less than our old place with EDF.

I had the same problem in my last house. Not sure of your supplier but mine was British Gas. I telephoned them and they told me I would have had to pay a charge to have a standard meter fitted, however as I was a previous British Gas customer this was waived and I had my new meters fitted within a few weeks.
I had some nasty looking letters arriving for the previous residents so I explained on the phone that they may have had finicial difficulties and they were really understanding and extremely helpful.
Good luck in your new home0 -
Hi,
It depends who your supplier is. I work for SSE (who own Southern Electric, Swalec, Scottish Hydro and Atlantic) and they do not charge to replace a prepayment meter with a credit meter - they used to a few years back, but not any more. The only reason the company you are with would refuse (AFAIK) is if there is a debt on the meter, which wouldn't be yours anyway, so shouldn't be a problem. Have you phoned the supplier to tell them you now own the property? If not, do so as you may be paying the previous tenants debt!

we had the same, both gas & electric, we were with british gas who couldn't even help us (most rude) so switched to scottish power/southern electric and they changed it free of charge, We now pay £70 per month dd and are always in credit compared to £110 (on a good month) for card meter.

Do not deal with the old supplier. Pick a new one and call them, touting. They should replace the meter FOC.0

i think you will find to have a prepayment metre taken out is free as the supplier has to supply you with a metre that is not a prepayment if you do not have bad credit with them , and all prepayment metres charge more0

I checked back now and yes, it was the previous resident that caused us grief and so I gave up in the end.THE_LONE_RANGER wrote:and all prepayment metres charge more
Do they? mine doesn't, we pay 9.53p per Kwh on pre-pay with no standing charge.
According to energyhelpline, my parents pay 10% more for their electric paying by DD monthly with EDF, and boy do they complain, but they never get off their !!!!!! to do anything about it...BSC Member 44 - not bankrupt yet, but getting there...0
