Debt Advice for a friend

My friend was made redundant in February 2010, she received a redundancy package in the region of 10k. At present she is strictly speaking unemployed but gets an occasional income from causal work. She is struggling with crippling bank charges of around £200 per month because of unpaid direct debits due to exceeding her overdraft.. Although I have common sense, I don't know how best to advice her, what should she do in this situation? She can't get out of her overdraft because of the bank charges she receives every month. She only has a small amount of her redundancy left. She now can't use her debit or credit cards and is getting late payment charges on her credit card.

Any advice is very welcome.

    Hi

Her starting point is to open a new basic bank account with a company that has no relationship with her current bank.

Why is she not signing on for JSA etc?
