usually booking in advance and specifying what time you are traveling knocks plenty off the cost

https://www.thetrainline.com is a great site. Usually you find it is cheaper to purchase two singles rather than a return. Might be worth seeing if there are any discounts for Glasgow to Cardiff and then getting a separte ticket to Bridgend from there.

Go to the gner website and book a single there and a single back - you'll get 10% off advance fares on there too. Go for off peak times eg avoid travelling before 0930 or between 1500-1800 and book as far in advance as you can - currently bookings are up to mid february.
