Moving to a different county

I currently live in Wiltshire and have decided I would like to move back to Cornwall where I was born and grew up.

I am wondering how best to do this, whether it's to just move down there and then look for a job or find a job first and then move and how I go about doing this with regards to interviews etc.

It's not something I plan to do immediately as I will need to save up some money first but hoping to do it within the next 6-12 months (well that's the goal anyway :)).

Does anyone have any experience of doing this or can advise on the best way of doing this move. It is just me so don't have to worry about family, finding schools etc.

i have moved around a bit, honestly if you look for jobs first before you move you never seem to actually move because i was always waiting to hear from the job, the best way i have found is to find a property and move right there and then, and look for jobs after the move, that way yes your in a place with no job but it gives you the kick up the back side to go find work.

hope it helped, i just take the risk and move it has always worked out ok but not always for work.
    Owed out = lots.

See I did it the other way, I have moved 3 times and each time found work and then secured my house, it is a bit of a rush once you get the job but I always felt that bit more scure

I recently relocated 200 miles away, to join my husband (having spent all our courtship living and working apart!). Prior to this, I researched the area workwise by looking at how often "my" job came up and decided that if I was to quit my job and move, I should hope to get another job fairly swiftly, in the new area. I spoke to several agencies prior to moving and lined up a couple of interviews with them, but to put you forward for vacancies they really want you there and available quickly for interviews. However, some companies have a longish recruitment process so you could start looking to apply for those roles a couple of weeks before you relocate.

As it happens I was offered one job after looking for three weeks, and another after four weeks of looking. By the time I start my new job next week, I will have been out of work for 7 weeks, but 2 weeks was due to my new employer having delays in getting the paperwork signed off and the contracts sent out etc. I had been planning to temp if I didn't land a permanent or long term contract within a few weeks of looking.

A few people thought I was mad to give up my job but it would have been so difficult and expensive to try and find a job prior to moving with taking leave from work and travelling etc. I guess it depends on your individual circumstances. Do you have family or friends that you could stay with initially when you relocate to save on costs?

I know when I was looking to move to Cornwall a few years ago I was advised to find somewhere to live and then look for a job but at that time I would have had a bit of money from the equity of my house to tide me over. This time round once the house has been sold I probably won't have any equity, hence the saving up.

I do have friends down in Cornwall but only those that I've gotten back in contact with after about 20 odd years so feel I couldn't impose on them.

I guess my fear is that if I move down before finding a job I won't be able to afford any place I find. I guess life is one big risk though and shouldn't try to worry about it too much.

I would definitely not move without a job to go to. Apart from anything else, Cornwall's a big county and you could base yourself in Bodmin and be offered a job in Penzance!

I guess I'm making it difficult for myself in that there are only two places I would want to move to and probably I've ruled one of those places out as it's quite an expensive fishing village.
