PMSL so how do you think they update the 9000 prices on the checker now then some people in an office manually checking the Asda website??? Of course not. the checker now doesn't check bar codes it's working off of descriptions which is why you're getting silly NF's when Asda clearly do sell the item because it's vague and non-descript

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong direct access to the database of course not BUT you can still run queries to pick out your 9000 items quite easily after all I can do it manually using their website and typing in a search so therefore quite easy to code the search yourself there are plenty of examples that do this already, one being the MSE one that checks/checked for cheap seats on the budget airlines it's not hard to do at all for someone with half a brain.

I think it's you who doesn't have any experience of how a database interacts with a website. Not to mention as someone who used to work for one of the big supermarkets doing pretty much this so hey ho :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Ah just seen your post then clarifying the point I never claimed it would be completely possible you will always have some kind of mismatch that's where a human follow up would come in you'd still have the vast majority done as a screen scraper and i'd venture to suggest theres far more that would easily be matched than not. Something being hard is no reason not to try or we'd still be sitting in caves without fire....

LOL - just saw your follow up too just before I replied with my initial response. This thing is catching. :)

Yeah, then I bow to your superior knowledge. Apologies for the assertion that I made regarding the comment I made re: programming.

With regards to airlines though, it must be a bit easier because every airport has a unique three digit code.

I put the reason for prices being posted late in the day down to it being largely a manual task. I also put the reasons why the list of N/Fs changing on a regular basis is also due to it being largely a manual task.

Realistically, if ten people were given a list of products and two or three letters of the alphabetic each, it probably would take that long to check 900 products each (that would only be two every minute for a regular seven and a half hour day - and for big groups of items the operative could easily type Andrex, for example to clear a lot in one go).

There would be uproar if wrong prices appeared on Price Check, would there not? I think Tesco are relying on a manual approach in favour of accuracy ahead of speed? I think there is a whole lot of manual intervention going on, not in an attempt to defraud people, but in an attempt to be accurate.

    What do you think?

Another edit I'm afrard: Post 3069 below confirms what I suspected. As long as the Tesco CS person was telling the truth of course.

Am I missing something here? surely if there is no Tesco price check list then

how do we know what we can /cannot buy? I understand we can compare the

prices ourselves and find great deal but if it aint on the list how will T's compare it? personally i'm waiting 'til monday

Tesco CS have said that prices are pulled from Asda website according to a few posts on this thread.

Just because their price checker isn't open to the public doesn't mean it's not working.

Can you not just keep your eyes on here as you can amend your order between now and then.

I've not used online shopping for years but this used to be the case..

I ordered by opening tesco website and Asda and comparing each item. I think I'll have untill 4AM Monday to change...so ill check the items the night before and amend.

    Thank you. x

Yep, spoke to Tesco dot com manager yesterday, their team check ASDA prices manually and update their database - apparently they are really flat out and occasional omissions happen.

Quick question, with the tesco price checker being offline atm I understand we can use tesco and asdas sites to search and compare products but how do we know whether tesco will have a price on them or have them as n/f? tia

We don't know for sure, and to be fair even items appearing on Price Check weren't always appearing on the DTD comparison anyway - it seemed more like a safe bet if it was on Price Check, that was all.

If you can restrict your shopping to non-perishable goods you can always return them later. There is at least that safety net.
