I think we all sometimes feel that if we cannot get what we are asking for the person at the other end of the phone is being nasty. However I think it is completely unacceptable that they increase your limit bearing in mind your reduced circumstances. Personally I would have kept it and just because it has been increased dosn't mean you have to spend it but could be very useful in an emergency.

sorry I replied before your edit :)

I do have some "emergency" funds on one of my other cc's which has a lower interest rate, so I refused the increase just to make sure I wasn't tempted to use it.

no not at all. I wasn't actually asking for anything other than advice, he was very very abrupt with me, kept telling me I HAD to pay in a very aggressive tone of voice. When I started to get upset (I was explaining that the problems were partly due to a death in the family), he barked "well that isn't going to help is it" It says on the back of my cc bill "if you are experiencing financial difficulties repaying the minimum amount on this statement please contact us on {phone number} to discuss your situation.

So I did, and got shouted at for being honest.

I often think phoning a contact centre is like a lottery. If someone is being unhelpful then put the phone down and phone again. Hopefully the next person you speak to will be more sympathetic. Wish you the best of luck.

    thank you.

You are probably right about the next person I speak to being totally different. The lady I spoke to this morning was lovely, granted I was phoning to turn down money not tell her I wasn't going to be able to pay, but all the same even when I explained my situation to her as to why I didn't want the increased limit she was much friendlier than the other person was.
