How long before I can apply for a loan?

Hi, when I moved house last year I accrued about 12 searches on my credit history (utilities, mortgage, credit cards, loans (for comparison)etc). The loans/credit cards were not approved at the time because of the other searches and I recently tried again for a loan with 2 different lenders but again was turned down. I have checked my history and spoken to the lenders, the conclusion being that it is only the number of searches still showing on my history that is affecting my ability to get credit. Had I realised the effect the searches had I would have been more careful!
Does anyone know how long it will take for the searches to drop off the system and how many searches affect the decision?
Thanks
