I love your formula. I don't suppose you would care to replace the -x%risk and maintenance figure with an actual figure would you?

As Cardew rightly says, as is usual in cases involving allowances for future events, x is the unknown factor. However, having said this you could take a stab at what it's likely to be ....
Let's assume that a system cost £15k and an inverter replacement would be £2k. If the inverter is changed every 10 years x would be (2/15)%/10 = 1.3%/annum and maybe you'll need some kind of engineering visit over the same period, so x being somewhere around 1.5% would likely be the figure you're looking for ....
Rough & ready I know, but as a stake in the ground it's probably not too far out ....

Hi
If the inverter is changed every 10 years

You can warrant the Inverter for 25 years, or SMA for example will give you a guaranteed 24 hr swap replacement/reconditioned unit complete with 12 month guarantee for around 360euro. No need for a £2000 ? inverter They don't cost that much now. In a few years they'll likely cost less.
You'll likely spend more having the panels cleaned once a year by your window cleaner than on anything else.0 -

Agreed, but you need to put a stake in the ground somewhere.
Any chance you could do a little research & let us all know what the gross price of a 25year warranty on a SB4000TL inverter would be to the customer and then an idea of what the cost for supplying and installing a replacement SB4000TL would be from a typical MCS installer on a current cost VAT inclusive basis .... I mention the SB4000TL because it's referred to quite a lot on this forum & elsewhere.
Thanks

The SMA web site indicates a cost of 2,700 Euro + 19% VAT for a warranty extension to 25 years.

Any chance of someone providing an idea for an installed price for a SB4000TL ? (more rhetoric I wonder )
Thanks

Solar Essence have just quoted me £12989 for 16 x Sharp 245Wp = 3.92kW
Quoted FIT in first year £1457
Payback quoted as 7y4m assuming 6% RPI and 11% electricity inflation (I know these seem a bit high)
Seems like a good price compared to other prices mentioned here. I was expecting £15k-£20k for a near 4kW system. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

Just a number of things worth considering to see whether the price is good ....
What inverter (make/model) ?
Where is the inverter to be installed ?
Remote monitor included ?
Who manufactures the mounting kit / how mounted to roof ?
What is the guarantee on install ?
Looking at the payback, as you say, it looks a little skewed in favour of the salesman. On that kind of purchase price and using what I would consider as being more realistic forecasting on inflation & energy prices you would more probably break even somewhere in year 9, so allowing for an inverter failure at around that time work on a 10 year payback, which is quite good.

Hi I was wondering somebody can help me.
I have got quotes for 3 companies now. They all are for 3.99kw panels.
Schoto (probably i'm spelling it wrong) panels = £14300
Upsolar panels = £14500 with sma inverter and bluetooth monitoring including.
Solar world panels = £15000 with sma inverter and bluetooth monitoring including
one person said that we should put the inverter in house as in loft it will become very hot (in summers ) and very cold in winters which will reduce its life. ANother guy said that it should go in loft as otherwise because of longer cable between panels and inverter the electricity transferred will do down.
What do you guys think about these prices and panels? They spoke highly of solar world and Schoto. They also said that SMP inverter is the best.0 -

PANELS: Sharp NU-E245(J5) 245Wp High Output Modules
INVERTER: Sunny Boy SB4000TL-20 (High Frequency)
LOCATION: unknown (desktop quote, no site visit yet)
MONITOR: Sunny Beam Bluetooth Output Monitor Unit
MOUNTING: Schuco 210 Mounting System
WARRANTY ON INSTALL: 2YRS
No mention of warranty on inverter
This is my first detailed quote for panels, so any comments on the above would be welcome.
NB: I would prefer to use another make of panels because Sharp has a low ethiscore from "Ethical Consumer" magazine. Possibly Yingli. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
