According to the SMA webs site the SunnyBoy inverter is suitable for either indoor or outdoor installation so it's odd that so many of them have been installed in lofts.

Lazy solar pv installers I suppose.

It's much easier to replace or repair if its indooors. It's also dry and subject to less extremes of temperature and wind.

So I wouldn't want mine outdoors regardless of what the manufacturer says.

Why is is easier to repair/replace if it is indoors? and if you have a properly insulated loft then your inverter will be subjected to extremes of temperature.

    Hi

I'd be a little hesitant towards putting my inverter in the open even though it's IP54(Connections)/IP65(Electronics) rated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code), but, if there was no better solution, would have no real problem if it was to be mounted in an outside but covered area such as a carport .... however, for security sake I'd still prefer it to be locked away in a garage ...

The area that gives most protection from the weather would be directly under the eaves, so any repairs would need a ladder or access platform.

Last winter it was -17C outside but my loft did not get anywhere near that. I understand that lofts get hot in the summer and this can affect inverters, but if they were placed outside they could be in direct sunlight anyway.

My inverter is in an indoor boiler/utility room.
