I admire what you are trying to do, but to me it also seems a little too over the top.
I would have a house rule so to speak that downstairs is only used for "number 1's" and then set the cistern regulator so that it only fills to the absolute minimum to achieve a satisfactory flush. Or fit a dual flush system. End being only the minimal amount of water is used.

You use much more water for bathing/showers than flushing the loo. sure it's still saving on power/chemicals required to treat the water, but it's soooooooo tiny in the grand scheme of things... but sure these tiny things do add up.

I'm all for new builds having solar panels/ heat pumps / grey water systems etc as standard. Government should make this mandatory the costs will soon come down due to the mass production and will be more efficient than retro fitted units.

Lots of folks use rainwater and `grey` water for purposes like this. It doesn`t mean it`s third world living, but it IS greener than using fresh water. ;)

Yes if you plan for it , but carrying a bucket is and will always remain third world.

Even so, for some folks it is an option. If you don`t approve or don`t like it, why not just not read this thread instead of telling someone to leave the country? :)

I don't suppose it is for everyone, but if you have the time and have the water and on one level, then see no reason not to cart.
In my case it's not even extra work, because am up and down the garden all day.
Mind you cracking the ice this last winter, that was third world.
  • yes go for it

i have been using rain water for 3 years now. my water bill was £560 per year so i had a meter fitted and started to collect rain water.
i have 10 x 210 ltr water buts all linked together and i also dug out a hole in the garden and put in a concrete tank 3000 lts total water storage 5100 ltr
i then run a pipe in to the house and fitted a pump and 3 filters first filter is 10" 5 micron then 2nd filter is a 1 micron charcole filter the a big boy ceramic filter to 99.999 % pure
it then goes to all the water supply pipes for hot and cold
the water mains pipe only goes to the kitchen sink used for drinking cooking.
the system works all by its self so its no different when using the toilet washer ect.
every week i take a sample out of the waterbuts and tank and test it for Ph and alk and adj it with water treatment.
the filters get cleaned/replaced twice a year
cost of running the pump is 0 as it is powered by solar and battery
filter cost £6 others get cleaned.
pump cost £5 from b&Q in the sale
my water bill is now £120 per year £115 is standing charge.
in 3 years i have never run out of water.
    so all is well.

My first thought, 'get a life'

If you want to live in a third rate country move, you can take this MSE too far.

Maybe you should "get a life" instead of spending time on this forum reading and responding to threads you're not interested in.

Is it not permissable on an Internet forum to give an opinion on the merits/demerits of any proposed action?

Why not take this further and not use flushing toilets at all - use a bucket and deposit the contents on the garden. That way you won't have sewerage works having to process your waste.

It seems any proposal that is 'Green' must be beyond criticism or comment - now how many of you recycle your toenail clippings;)

You comments were not an opinion...they were plain insults. Since when is telling someone `get a life` an opinion?
Or saying they should move to another country if they are living as in a third world one here?
It`s typical, though, of folks prone to insulting others they don`t agree with, to resort to overexaggeration. ;)

if you sprinkle them around the base of your plants, they stop the slugs, their soft belly doesn't like them. :rotfl:
