Is this illegal?
Hi everyone,
Last year I started a casual job, meaning they called me everytime I wanted to come in and work for a few hours. When they recruited me they may have asked me (I cannot remember)for a National Insurance number (but at that time I didnt have one because I am not British). So I just gave them my bank details and passport.
I got the job anyway, got paid and paid taxes.
Is that legal to get paid without having a NI number?

I would check that they are passing your tax deducted on to HMRC. It's not impossible to work without a NI No, but the employer should take steps to get one if you don't have one, or they should ask you to apply for one.Signature removed for peace of mind0

I don't think you'd be in trouble: it's the employer's responsibility.Signature removed for peace of mind0
