Why anyone with a good degree in, say, science would go into teaching now is beyond me. People can already earn twice as much in industry.

But Bristish Pharma is laying off thousands of people currently. The University I work is full of people with good degrees in science who have been laid off from Astra Zeneca, for example

I'm not saying this never happened in the NHS, perhaps at very senior level, but as a department head for over 30 years I've never had this type of authority. In these times it is not going to happen either, we are too busy dealing with crippling 'efficiency' savings!
I know of two recent cases in a particular local authority where people were given (otherwise puzzling) promotions into higher management positions with attached scale rises just prior to retirement. Not so blatant as "Here's a pay rise, wink wink, nudge nudge", but the effect was the same. One just this year. And this from a second tier management position, not a very senior level.

However, higher contribution rates and increased retirement age will be painful.

Yes they will. However, with the got backed schemes, even with the changes, equating to around 15-20% of your salary if you were to buy the equivalent benefits privately, then it is still good value for money and still better what most get in the private sector.

I've noticed in the trust I work for the same group of people in the higher managment tier seem to be swapping jobs every few years (or a fancy new directorship role is developed). funnily enough they are all approach retirement age.
