Which online grocery stores deliver above the first floor?

I'm disabled and pretty much housebound. Until recently, Sainsburys have been delivering my groceries to my second floor flat. However, it has been sort of voluntary - apparently the drivers are no longer insured past the first floor so they carry the risk of being injured and unable to work if they have an accident bringing up my shopping.
I don't feel this is fair on the drivers and I would rather find a grocery store that will deliver to my second floor door as a matter of course. My driver today told me that all of the stores - Tesco, Asda and so on - have introduced the same policy and that he was no longer prepared to bring my shopping above the first floor landing. He says that disabled customers are expected now to get someone to help them but I don't have anyone.
Does anyone know if there is anywhere left that will deliver to me? I've just pinged an email off to Waitrose but their food is incredibly expensive and, being disabled, I'm on a tight budget. The alternative, though, is starvation!

Thanks, flyingbug - I just phoned to double check that they do this in my area and they said that they deliver up to three flights of stairs up.
What a relief! My hair had been standing on end at Waitrose's prices. My Sainsburys delivery guy was obviously misinformed (unless Tesco are about to go the same way and I really hope not!). I'll switch my order to Tesco. :j0 -

Hello, Sainsbury's won't deliver to my third floor flat, but Tesco and Asda do, and with a smile too. The Tesco pull the crates on a trolly thing up the block's stairs and the Asda guys either carry the crates two at a time (I usually have 4 crates) or the carry up the bagged shopping which is a couple of trips. I am so grateful that they do so and if they look really puffed-out I usually tip a pound for their trouble as they don't complain about the effort.0 -
Thanks, HomeAlone - a trolley sounds like a good idea. Not only am I switching my order to Tesco but I'm going to write to Sainsbury's head office and explain why. I think someone who thinks that the elderly and disabled have lots of willing helpers who can come round and schlep their shopping up the stairs every week doesn't know they're born.0

I'm a sainsburys delivery driver and for disabled and unable customers we request special time to allow delivery to your floor. I done the 5th floor many times. Obviously, if you are taking the mick by having such a amount of shopping it requires a lot of boxes and very many times up and down the stairs then this can be refused. But if you only got 2/3/4 boxes I cannot see the problem.
Yes the policy does exist. Something wording around "If you are above the 1st floor without a lift then we can only deliver to the ground floor entry area".
Ring up the call centre and explain the situation that you are not able and you are only on the second floor. Ask them to get in contact with the store and explain to them why the driver needs to go up the extra flight of stairs. Then the call centre will setup extra time for the driver to do your delivery and put on the paperwork that it needs to be taken in. The call centre will need to inform the store as well.
If you like, quote me :-) I will do it for you no problem. I live on the second floor. My neightbour and myself both get our shopping delivered and brought into the kitchen. So no reason why my fellow drivers at other stores should do the same.0 -
It does sound like a daft rule! A few years ago my dad was a Tescos delivery driver, he'd deliver to anyone anywhere and didn't seem to mind as long as he got a thankyou afterwards. But what stopped him carrying on the job was not the stair issue: it was delivering up one drive at night when it was dark, there was an extra drop at the end of the drive which was poorly lit. My dad had a box full of shopping when he felt the drop...too late and landed a back injury. Its not the stairs that were the issue: this had been my fathers retirement job!0

Quite honestly (and I am a Sainsburys home delivery customer) in the OP's place I wouldn't give my business to the company who expected me to jump through hoops to get it arranged and had drivers giving at best misleading info when there is another supermarket locally who just said yes and got on with it. Many disabled and elderly people use these services so why make it so complicated ? Have the drivers briefed properly so if the situation arises it can be sorted out for the customer quickly and they can be advised by the driver at the time what to do without having to ask around as the OP had to -just to find out.I'm a sainsburys delivery driver and for disabled and unable customers we request special time to allow delivery to your floor.
