don't know where to post this- child name..

sorry for posting on here, wasn't too sure where to put this post

Can the school agree with the PWC a "known as name" for the childs school records without consent from the NRP who has parental responsibility.?

also , will GCSE certificates hold this name or the childs real name?

thank you x

  • School can hold a "known name" but the GCSE certificates will need to be in their legally correct name. I'm not sure what happens if the NRP disputes the "known name".

You need to be a bit careful about doing this, though, as it may be a weapon to be later used against you, for example is there is a court case over contact or residence.

Known as names are not actually supposed to be used. If another person with PR discovers the correct name is not being used, they can contact the relevant person and get it changed.

the school seem to be a bit stupid and can't seem to cope with a NRP being involved either.

We questioned the name before and got a very woolly andswer.

Do we just tell them this was not authorised by us and they will change it or is it a long drawn out process?

thank you for your replies x

With regards to the name, it might be best to try and get the school to first recognise the NRP as an equal parent. Then discussions regarding the name could be approached.

We have the same thing with my partners daughter. Her mother, the PWC has her down at school under her new married name, not her real surname. OH has parental responsibility but the court says there is nothing to stop the PWC using her new name.
  • The GCSE certificates will be in their legal surname. As for the known name, you should contact the local authority and speak to the admissions team. Each authority rules and regs will be different. I've come accross this before, but the NRP consented to the new step-dads name being used.

    From experience.

Junior school will accept the surname given by the PWC.

Secondary school will require the child to be known and addressed by his birth certificate name regardless what name the PWC calls the child.

in which case, Oh needs to ensure that he is getting all the relevent info from the school and his PR is recognised.

In practice the mother is causing no end of grief for this child for years down the line. Every time the young adult has to produce their quals for employment purposes, academic prurposes or has to do a CRB check, they will have to explain the circumstances that led them to have used a different name. Do she really want all your chikld's future employers to know what a prat she is? it is embaressing.

My GCSE certificates came in my known name not my legal one, I don't think the school even knew my legal name and neither did the national insurance people who issued a number in my known name. The passport lot however insisted on my legal name, which later led to difficulties when I started working as my NI number was one name and my passport another - I ended up having to change my name by deed poll to get my passport changed so everything matched up. This then cost me an extra couple of hundred quid in document fees when I got married as all the deed poll stuff had to be translated. I have still never understood how this came about.
