if I change ownership of a property which is not main residence from single ownership to joint ie from just me to me and my common law wife will this be classed as disposal of an asset and therefore liable to CGT?

Yes, the exemption for transfers between spouses only applies if you're legally married (or in a formal civil partnership). There are no such exemptions etc for unmarried couples. You may be eligible/benefit from a holdover relief claim - google for it and have a look to see if it is relevant.0

Holdover only available if this is a business asset: holdover relief on 'gifts' was withdrawn many years ago. You could use a trust with a holdover claim but that would need expert advice as it might not suit your longterm purpose.0
