    Thanks for your reply.

Interestingly, my wife is on maternity and may not be going back to work. Would this therefore be deemed an acceptable explanation?

Sounds reasonable. Or you could say that she just hasn't made up her mind yet (if she wants to return to work). You could let them know about her credit but explain it's not the primary reason.

    so...

    Dear Mr Bank Manager

In answer to you question, my wife is currently on Maternity Leave and is yet to decide on whether or not she will return to work. She would therefore not be contributing financially and the decision was therefore made to apply in my name and for affordability to be judged on the same basis.

For afordability purposes your wife will be classed s a dependant of yours anyway so having no income would not necessarily exclude her from being on the mortgage.

There are many plausible answers but you are clearly looking for the 'best' one.

The only one to use is the truth, anything else could result in a decline and future problems.

I may be a little clueless here, what do you mean my a rod for your own back in the future?

Sorry, its a figure of speech. It means if you lie or leave information out and something happens in the future, and you cant remember what you lied about and what you indeed left out, so it could cause trouble for you.

Or the lie may be regarded as fraud and logged on a national lender database.

    Is it worth the risk?
