My great aunt, 88 still lives in a 1950s time warp. When people decorated then, they used to whitewash the window(s) of the rooms(s) being painted.

Still wanted her lounge window being whitewashed. A neighbour told her to use the pink Windolene and let it dry.

She moaned to her sister (my Nanan) about how difficult it was to get and cost her £2!
  • Managed to get mine from Wilkinson's, King's Lynn in the end. Phew - my life is safe!

My DD says the smell of Windolene always reminds her of when she was a little girl and coming home from school and smelling it in the sitting room To her it is a childhood memory that she loves, along with the smell of rock cakes cooking after school on a Monday as I always did home baking on Mondays to fill up the tins. She says that Windolene is the smell she most associates with me and her home. Not Chanel No 5 of posh perfume, but blooming window cleaner :):) .Says a lot about where my priorities were in the 1970s:):)
The smell I remember of my Mum is the 4711 cologne stick that she would rub on my forehead when I had a bad migraine as a child over 60 years ago.Isn't it weird what smells bring back memories.I still use the pink Windolene at indoors but the outsides get done buy a chap on a ladder now as I can't climb up to do them anymore

I use pink windolene too - my grandmother used to use it and I haven't found anything better, even the new windolene sprays and things are a patch on proper windolene! I buy it from the corner shop too :)

Can you still get it?! Wasn't it actually lilac and in a lilac bottle? It was the best - I thought they'd phased it out?
YAY! *reads rest of posts and goes hunting*
