Basic account with chequebook?

Hi
I am setting up a DMP (*sigh*) and need to set up a basic account as my current account (Co-op) is linked to one of my debts (Smile overdraft). I have debts with the following:
Smile
Nationwide
Barclaycard
HSBC
John Lewis Partnership Card (which I *think* is HSBC)
Egg
Littlewoods catalogue
Empire catalogue
Are there any basic bank accounts available with banks not linked to the above which will give me a chequebook (because I have to pay for school meals by cheque) and preferably a debit card that can be used online as I need to buy some of my groceries online??

Hi
Yes you can get a cheque book account with Alliance and Leicester. If you go to their site and apply for the premium account they'll turn you down but offer you the basic account instead. Just did mine and its great - got everything set up within 3 weeks.

You can shop online with solo cards, OH's Natwest card works most places. He has a step account.Barclaycard 3800

Thanks, I've checked and (understandably, if frustratingly) the basic accounts don't offer chequebooks. The A&L one is a standard current account as opposed to a basic account which is set up for people with bad credit etc.DFW stats:

Hi,
I was going to say that nationwide let you do cheques out of their cash machines, but I guess if you have an account with them, that's no good....
Would also reccomend the Natwest step account - that's what my partner has too, with a solo card! (more and more places are accepting it these days).
Is there any way you can pay for your school meals another way? Is cash out of the question?

Thanks, I've just applied for a Step account
I can pay by cash, but it's risky because I usually drop DD off at breakfast club before the school secretary is in for the day, so I'd have to leave it in an envelope in her intray. Also earlier this year I paid £30 in cash and nearly had kittens when I got a letter saying dinner money was overdue - turned out they'd put the money under the wrong name!! Oh well, maybe my mum can do me a cheque if I give her cash... DFW stats:
