Can't meet minimum repayments - help!

My husband and I split in August and I've moved into the stable conversion in the garden. We had accrued various debts together, in joint names and in sole names. I have a M & S card and 2 Barclaycards, which he was paying from the joint account but he has just cancelled the direct debits. I'm not working and am on income support now of £65 pw, plus child benefit for the three kids, who I have for about half the time. He has said more times than I care to mention that I can have half the tax credits but has not given me any support, other than paying the mortgage.

My card debts amount to about £10,000. I don't know how to begin to deal with them as I obviously can't even meet minimum repayments. He has very little money as his former company went bust and he is trying to set up a new company so I'm unlikely to get any help there. I just don't know where to start.

Any advice appreciated.

try the DFW board. Borrowing on credit is never a good idea.
  • To be honest contact M&S and Barclaycard directly and explain, they should be able to help you out somehow even if they set up a payment plan with you.

£1 of debt is too much for me!
  • might be better if he ended his child tax credit claim and let you make one,you may get more that way

Yup, you could always call the Tax Credits Helpline and dispute this...

  • Thanks all. I have been in contact with the tax credits helpline on numerous occasions and until he ends his claim they will do nothing. He keeps saying he will do this but no sign so far.

BUT there is some light at the end of the tunnel as I've been offered a job - on the tax credit helpline!!! I know I can't do anything for my own claim but at least I'll understand the system a bit better and may be able to play the system a bit better, and perhaps help the good people on this site.

I will speak to M&S and Barclaycard and see if we can agree anything. I do at least feel a little more optimistic now I'm starting work even though it's only a 6 month contract.
