paid of a dept ,now there asking again HELP PLEASE

first of all sorry if i posted in the wrong post ,very new to this,

when i moved in with my partner she had a lot of dept,so i went about geting it all cleared,we made final dept payment 3 weeks ago after 2 years of paying of various dept collectiors ect,then today 8-03-2011 my partner got a letter saying we owe £350 ,which we allready paid it was one of the first ones,they said they have tried writing and ringing which they have not done,as it was cleared,this one was paid around a year ago,but i do not have any proof the payment letter ect ,so i am really stuck ,i did phone them first of all and said i have the letter saying we have paid ,thinking it was the most reistant .i phoned them and said i have the letter saying we have paid you ,he said we will give me 2 weeks to get the letter to us ,only when i hung up i noticed it was a different company ,the old one,me and my partner have ripped the house apart looking for this letter ,as i have been made redundant and my partner is pregnant again ,and with no grants anymore we could really do without this,as we still owe her mother money ,as she was over £4000 in dept with her mother before we met,but that is it now a lot lower ,but we are litterally on bare essentials £30 a week for a family of 5 a week shoping cant get much lower.
anyway enough of my dirty laundry lol,

i paid all the depts via bank but unsure which one,as it could have been my partners or mine,so was thinking either order 3 years of statments for 3 different accounts and search through every page until i find the payment , or if possiable get a credit report check for my partner ,and would they have put the dept was cleared/paid on the whatever date?

or should i send a letter saying this dept is cleared as it was paid,please prove otherwise?

any help would be much appreciated,as everytime we nearly get out of dept something pops up

Who is chasing you for what?

Bailiff or debt collector?

When ever you pay these fools you really needed to make a trail, get receipts, some sort of proof. Ok hindsight is a great thing but doesnt help you.

Unfortunately you will need to go back and take a look at your statements. Write down every debt that you had and any statements that you have had from these debts.

For the sake of £350 debt, and say working at min wage it would take 59 hours to get £350, i reckon it might take you 4 hours to gather all your statements and go through each one to find this payment.


You can check online at your credit report, remember to check all 3 just in case they only report to one. Again this might not be 100% correct as they might not have updated your account.

capquest ex capital one bank who are saying we owe money two,
we have just paid ./ge capital global consumer finance ltd

and i thought for a moment as we have just paid this one then it was the same one until i looked properly,
we paid capital one a year if not 2 ago .

i have never done a credit check and finding it confusing as theres some that do one some that do 3,theres american ones that dont do uk. also as they changed there name im unsure who the payment would have went to ,
could anyone recommed any credit checkers ? also if i buy 3 years of statments thats £30 ,oviously i would be happy paying this but dont want to pay it unless i can be sure i no what i am looking for , and as i have never done a credit report i dont no how it will show if my partner has paid some ect thank you again for any help

You can get free credit reports from

Equifax and Experian, just remember to cancel after you have them before free trial is up. These are the 2 main ones that are used.

Just to let you know on other forums capquest is also refered to as crap quest. Have a look on CAG - consumer action group for capquest.

One solution also - do you have paperwork from your previous debts?

What sometimes happens is the left doesnt speak to the right so one DCA might be chasing the same debt as another.

Does you bank have telephone banking? In which case you could ring up the bank and ask them to look for the payment for you, save you ordering statements. It would probably take them about 10 mins to go through your past accounts. If you wanted to save on the telephone call some banks have an in-house phone in the bank.

thank you both very much i will try now to do credit report just worried they will be a bit of hassle to cancel ,as the house phone has been cut of ,oh the joys lol,

Just a thought - if you go into your bank and ask to speak to one of the Customer Facing Advisors they can look for you on their screen or make a call on your behalf. So long as you have the amount they can make a definite search. Then go to CAB and ask if they will call the Debt Collector/Baliff on your behalf or help you write a letter. Good luck. Billie

hi cheers billy will ask the missis to give it ago as its her account ,the only thing is the bill is £350 but i allways negotiate with them to get the price down a bit so unsure the final amount.

i checked her credit report and it says 4 of them that were setteled say default, unsure what default meens ? the rest say settled,but theres some that were setteled in 2007 and still say default,

i think i will have to go bank well missis,and say can you look up any payments for captial one payments ,then go csa when i have the proof, thanks again for all the help ,if anyone else has any ideas help ect ,please let me no ,thanks
