SRJ Debt and Advantis Credit

I received today a letter from both SRJ Debt and Advantis Credit for a Virgin Media Bill.
I did previously have a Virgin account up until May of last year, but had been told it was settled. However when I spoke to Virgin today, they advised I'd been given wrong information and that in November the debt was bought by Advantis Credit.
The person couldn't understand nor work out where SRJ came into it, but I told him I would not be phoning any of these companies at all.
Can anyone here advise if there's a connection between the SRJ and Advantis as to why they'd both be writing to me regarding the same outstanding balance?
I've requested that Virgin send me something in writing, which I was told would be done, however i was advised Virgin themselves can not take direct payment.
If they can do this, I'm happy to pay, but curious to see if anyone can explain how 2 companies can be contacting me over the same thing.

The companies may be related. One may be acting on behalf of the other (common for debt collectors). Or the debt may have been sold on more than once.
If Virgin have formally sold on the debt, then they can’t clear it by taking payment now.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
